More wood slabs are being loaded into our kiln oven for drying. It's a very tedious process, fully by hands. Just like how to produce our furniture pieces. The wood slabs are big and heavy. We need to stack properly to maximum efficiency.Wood drying is a very crucial process to us. It is a very important factor that determine the quality of the solid wood. All our wood will go through the sun dry process first before going through the kiln-dry process.
Ever since from the start, we have a lot clients ask the question regarding South and North American Walnut wood compared with Suar wood. As a honest and responsible supplier of Suar wood in Singapore, we do not pass our Suar wood as any Walnut wood and we highlighted the differences between Suar wood and Walnut wood to our clients. In today's retailer scene, the practice of naming Suar as any Walnut has gained popularity which in turns demand a much higher price or to gain sales when such "walnut" wood slab is sold for low prices. To most end-users, the wood grain of Suar wood and Walnut wood can have some similarity at some instances. I have a lot of concerns and hesitated for a long time in writing this post as this action will put a target board behind our backs.
South American Walnut
South American Walnut tree is a slow growing fruit tree that produces the walnut fruit. Similar to almost all fruit trees, Walnut tree is a slow growing tree. The hard, durable wood of Andean walnut is highly prized in cabinetry, flooring, veneers, utensils, and other forms of decoration. In South America, it is referred to as nogal, and is among the most expensive woods available. Because the fact that Walnut wood is hard wood, it can be cut into thin boards or planks in the production of joint wood furniture products. The most economical way to use Walnut wood is to churn into veneers and stick the walnut veneers onto a more inferior and cheaper wood structure to make it look expensive. Working backwards, the fact the Walnut tree is a fruit producing hard wood, its not logical to cut the whole tree just to sell of the wood log at cheap prices because one can simply harvest the nuts which are also highly priced. As a type of hard wood, you shouldn't expect there will be an abundant of natural fallen trees to be available in big wood slabs for dining table. Sure there are slabs available in the market, but be prepared to pay for a much higher price compared to Suar wood. For more read-up and information, kindly refer to here.
North American Walnut
Similar to South American Walnut tree, North American Walnut tree is a slow growing tree that produces the Walnut fruit. Black walnut wood is highly prized for its dark-colored, straight grained, true heartwood. It is heavy, strong and shock resistant. It is one of the most durable hardwoods in the US. Due to the high price for this type of wood, the most economical way to use Walnut wood is to make them into veneers and use the veneers on a more inferior and cheaper wood structure. Why retailer use different name for Suar Wood
Now that we understand the differences between Suar wood and Walnut wood, we need to understand why retailers sell their Suar wood as North American Walnut wood and South American Walnut wood.
The wood commonly marketed and sold under these name is not walnut at all but Suar or Acacia. I need to stress the point again that Walnut trees belong to the family Juglandaceae while Suar trees are members of the family Fabaceae as highlighted earlier on. Suar wood is marketed as walnut because retailers feel that the name is more appealing to buyers. Suar wood holds wood stain very well and with its wood grain can be very similar to Walnut wood. With most buyers are very familiar with the properties of the wood, Suar wood can be pass off to end users as Walnut wood after applying walnut colour wood stain onto Suar wood.
Selling Suar wood as Walnut wood is a very lucrative business because Walnut is a highly prized wood. The high price of solid Walnut wood is highly recognised by many consumers. Just by changing the name of Suar, retailer can demand at least 2 to 3 times the price of a normal Suar wood. End users tends to fall for the deal when they come across a piece of fake Walnut wood at a low price. These practices can be seen when some suppliers or retailers post their so called Walnut products but look very much alike those of Suar wood products.
Definitely in the market, there are suppliers and retailers selling genuine Walnut wood. Be advise that a big piece of solid Walnut wood that can be made into a table can demand a very high price. The ways to bring down the cost of solid Walnut furniture is either to use smaller pieces Walnut wood, joined together to form a bigger piece or to use Walnut veneers to paste them over a inferior wood. The best way to protect yourself when shopping for Walnut products is to read up more information and study the natural wood tone and wood grain of Walnut carefully or purchase from a trusted retailer or supplier. Not to be fooled by a piece of Suar wood in Walnut wood stain colour.
